EIFS is a proven technology, one used extensively throughout Europe and North America for more than 40 years. Today, in the United States EIFS comprises 30% of the commercial building market.
TYPICAL EIFS COMPONENTS
For optimum performance, the components of an EIFS need to be carefully selected to work together. Usually applied to the outside face of exterior buildings, an EIFS comprises:

Insulation: Medium Grade expanded Polystyrene with Flame Retardant. |

A coating of a flexible material and alkaline resistant fibreglass mesh reinforcing for added strength and longevity. |

A durable, crack-resistant topcoat or finish coat — typically an acrylic co-polymer prdouct. |
Other components used in an EIFS include weatherproofing materials such as sealants, flashing tapes and breathable builder’s paper.
NOT ALL EIFS ARE
CREATED
OR INSTALLED EQUAL
For finished appearance and durability an EIFS relies on being designed and installed as a system. This includes creating a sealed, weatherproof barrier before the render systems are applied.
Unfortunately, there are EIFS in Australia that do not meet these requirements and are consequently liable to develop problems.
